Meet Cheryl

I am a counseling professional with a passion for working in schools with struggling students. My specialty is in working with children from ages 4-12 who suffer from emotional and social challenges that get in the way of their success in school. These can include loss, anxiety, depression, neurodiversity, selective mutism, parent incarceration, or being a part of the foster care system. I have found that when individual work is combined with classroom support and parent consultation, children are best able to work through challenges and grow.
I have worked as a licensed school counselor since 2003 and as a play therapist since 2018. I first worked in a large inner-city elementary school in the Los Angeles area and then at the American Cooperative School in Tunis, Tunisia. In Tunis, while counseling with students who had experienced the trauma of civil war, I discovered the tremendous healing power of play therapy. In 2016, I returned to the States and in 2021 earned my qualification as a School-Based Registered Play Therapist (SB-RPT).
For the past six years, I have worked in Yamhill county schools providing play therapy at the elementary to early middle school levels. I integrate my intimate understanding of how schools work with play therapy to help students both individually and as members of a school community.
I currently live on a small farm in the Willamette Valley with five goats, nine chickens, eighteen pigs, two cats, and a cheeky corgi named Zelda. When I am not working with students or farming, I travel, swim, hike, and make lots of jam.
